First Time “Gaudeamus” Student Song and Dance Festival Culture news
In short time Daugavpils is to host the 17th Baltic Song and Dance Festival “Gaudeamus”, taking place June 27-29. According to the tradition, the Baltic States host the festival in turns. Latvia has hosted the festival five times already, the host cities being not only Rīga, but also Ogre, Liepāja, and Cēsis. Daugavpils – the biggest city of the Latgale region – has been appointed for such position for the first time. Therefore, this year our country has a unique opportunity to introduce the distinctive culture and traditions of the Latgalian region to the participants and the guests of the festival.
Come to Daugavpils to enjoy a rich in variety „Gaudeamus” festival programme (http://ej.uz/Gaudeamus_programma), where along with the traditional concerts of Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian folk songs, folk dances and folklore traditions you will also find other creative events, happening for the first time in festival history – the Symphonic Music Concert and the Exhibition of Works of Rectors of Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian Art Academies at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.
The entrance to all the events of the festival is free of charge, however, given the seat limit in a number of events (Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Folk Dance Ensembles’ Concert; Symphonic Music Concert; Grand Folk Dance Concert) the festival offers an opportunity to subscribe to the gratis entrance cards that are available starting from June 16 at the Daugavpils Latvian Culture Centre box office, the address – Rīgas iela 22a.
We encourage the guests of the festival not to miss the opportunity to explore and to get to know the city along with its picturesque surroundings. You may want to follow your own route or use the routes offered by the Daugavpils Regional Tourist Information Centre: http://www.visitdaugavpils.lv/en/routes. Come and see the idyllic lakes and hilly landscapes, spires of the churches, historical mansions and castles, peculiar pottery and many more wonders this amazing Latvian region has to offer.
Who knows, maybe this “Gaudeamus” route of song and dance will be your event #1 of the summer, and will become one the most beautiful memories to remember! Come this summer to Daugavpils – don’t miss the fun!
