NEW EXHIBITION SEASON AND NEW WORKS OF MARK ROTHKO IN DAUGAVPILS

Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre is thrilled to announce a very special event – an arrival of much-awaited new original works of Mark Rothko which will be presented for all art lovers as from 24 April 2016!

The originals of the world-famous painter as well as a number of domestic and international exhibitions will be on display to mark the third anniversary of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.

As the first three-year period featuring works of the world famous abstract expressionist Mark Rothko deposited from the collection of Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko is approaching the end, currently displayed Rothko’s paintings will be on view only until the 10th of  April. Then these works will return to the original collection and perhaps only a few art lovers from far and near will be able to see them scattered among museums Europe-wide.

Undoubtedly, thanks to the painter’s name, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre has become the most visited place in Latgale and has been included in the list of top 10 tourist destinations in Latvia. Many believe that the exhibition of Mark Rothko’s paintings is a must-see tourist attraction on any sightseeing tour around Latvia. In addition to Rothko’s works, the Art Centre offers an opportunity to enjoy top quality changing expositions of paintings, graphics, photography, textile and installation art works, as well as other media art works by distinguished Latvian and foreign artists.

The created exhibition of Rothko’s originals was presented as the only long-term, permanent and retrospective exhibition in Europe featuring Mark Rothko’s works from all of his periods. The new exhibition of Rothko’s works will also offer a retrospective of never-before-exhibited in Latvia works of the distinguished master from the collection of his descendants Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko. By tradition, this exhibition will feature one painting from the master’s realistic period, two works from his surrealist period, one piece of work from the period of his transition to so called classic Rothko-style art and two works from his classical period.
