Cultural Centre “Siguldas Devons” will show the exhibition “Opening” from the Rothko Centre collection

On 11 September, the art and culture space “Siguldas Devons” will launch its third season with the exhibition “Opening” from the collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.

The exhibited art is a manifesto for loneliness and emptiness, also openness and cooperation. The paintings share the motif of symbolic and literal tunnels, portals, windows and doors. One is tempted to think that frozen space and fragments of buildings have taken centre stage, but in each composition, there is a palpable human presence behind the virtual or actual opening; a presence that includes the artist, who, although the work is complete, continues to address the viewer through this sometimes infinitesimal gap.

The exhibition is assembled from the collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, featuring thematically relevant artwork by Ludmila Procenko, Ieva Rupenheite, Inta Celmiņa, Valerijans Dadžāns, Sigita Daugule, Vineta Kaulača, Edvards Grūbe, Osvalds Zvejsalnieks, Elga Grīnvalde and Silva Linarte.

The collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre has been developing from since the idea of the centre was first proposed. It is replenished every year with procurements, creative outputs of symposium participants and valued donations from artists and other partners, reaffirming existing and prospective cooperation commitments in different art projects. Currently, the collection is comprised of more than 2,000 artworks in various media. The Rothko Centre aspires not only to preserve this valuable collection, but also to exhibit it regularly, both on its own premises and in other art and culture spaces in Latvia and beyond.

The exhibition will be opened at 7 p.m. on 11 September at the Cultural Centre “Siguldas Devons”.

The exhibition is on display until 4 October.
