Opening of the first exhibition season of 2019 at the Rothko Centre

At 4 p.m. on Friday 1 February, the first exhibition season of 2019 will be opened at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.
With the opening of six new art projects that make up the new year’s first exhibition season at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, we want to highlight such themes as truth, mission and internal uniformity in art.

Through the artist’s touch and skill, art freezes the moment of truth, be it ugly or beautiful. The different faces of truth, versatility and uniqueness – all that and more can be gleaned in the work of this season’s featured artists from Latvia and beyond.

The principal value of art, its ultimate goal that is to be pursued, lies in remaining faithful to one’s style and to the principles dictated by one’s chosen technique, nurturing traditions and passing them on to a new generation of artists while retaining the exuberance of youth and the touch of irony in one’s artistic experiments.

As we create and tell our stories in a world of things uniquely meaningful to us individually, we enter the cultural space of the 21st century each with our own internal uniformity. In art, it gives us a shared goal and defines our separate truths.

The new exhibition season, open to the public from 1 February until 14 April, features such shows as “The Play of Light and Dark” by Inta Celmiņa and Edvards Grūbe, “Internal Uniformity” by Wang Shaojun, “Moments” by Belarusian watercolour painter Alexander Karpan and “Architecture in Painting” by Oļģerts Krauklis. In addition, Pashmin Art Gallery from Germany has brought to Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre a group show by 15 international artists on the topic “Beauty is Truth, Truth Beauty”. Finally, Romanian artists Ovidiu Leuce and Delia Maxim together with Pinar Baklan Önal from Turkey offer a joint exhibition project “Ugunī” featuring artwork created right here, in Daugavpils Fortress, in the framework of the Rothko Centre’s residency programme.

On 1 February, during the new season’s opening event, all temporary exhibitions will be available free of charge.
