Participants of the STEM camp reach one of the highest peaks in Norway City news
Within the framework of the implementation of the project activities, on August 14-19, 2022, an international summer camp for youth in Norway was organized by Daugavpils City Municipality in cooperation with Trondheim Science Centre.
Students from Daugavpils (Latvia) and Trondheim (Norway) participated in the camp with the purpose to combine theoretical knowledge, practical and social skills in the STEM field in order to cope with challenging tasks, motivating training and lessons in nature and co-creation spaces.
During the international camp, it was possible to get to know the mountains and glaciers of Norway. The impact of climate change on the environment and nature in general was evaluated. Various measurements and experiments were carried out in nature, and there was also the opportunity to go on a challenging expedition.
Participants of the camp lived near one of the highest peaks in Norway – Snøheim. The Snøhetta massif is very impressive as it rises high above the Dovre plateau. In addition to having more than 10 peaks over 2000 meters in the vicinity of Snøheim, the area is also very rich in fishing waters. Only the hardiest camp participants from Latvia and Norway reached Snøhetta's peak, which is 2288 meters high. Along the way, endurance was tested by both rain and hail and strong wind. Many hoped to see a muskox as well, but luckily, they did not.
In the co-creation spaces of the Trondheim Science Centre, it was possible to work in the field of robotics and create your own unique robots. All participants had the opportunity to communicate with each other in different working groups, as well as in an informal environment. Young people willingly engaged in active discussions on current topics, presented their city and country, and also gained new knowledge and skills in an international atmosphere.
The camp was an adventure of gaining new knowledge and practical experience about STEM, which probably changed and certainly broadened the participants' perception of the fields of science, their application in nature and everyday life.
The camp was organized within the framework of the project “Development of Innovation Centre in Daugavpils”, project No. NFI/IC/VIAA/2020/4, Agreement No. 9.-20.2.2.1/4, under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism for the period 2014-2021 program “Research and Education” activity “Innovation Centres”.
