Daugavpils will hold the grandest city festival of recent years City news

The city festival “My City Daugavpils – the City of Opportunities” (June 3 – June 9), which in 2013 is devoted to entrepreneurs, is going to be the grandest celebration of the city’s anniversary of the recent years.

At the celebration of the 738 anniversary ofDaugavpilsthe residents and guests of the city will be offered a vast program, which will begin on June 3 with concerts held in the residential areas of the city.  The culmination of the city festival will take place on June 8 and 9.

By devoting the city festival to entrepreneurs,Daugavpilswould like to thank businessmen for their contribution to development of the city. “The municipality is thankful to entrepreneurs for their work, investments and work places. Achievements of the entrepreneurs have a great importance for development of the city”, emphasizes Žanna Kulakova, the chairperson of Daugavpils City Council.

Eleonora Kleščinska, the head of Cultural department of Daugavpils in its turn points out that the city festival is one of the main cultural events of Daugavpils and each year it shall become even more magnificent and interesting in order to attract more city guests.

Creative groups and artists fromLatvia,Lithuania,Belarus,RussiaandSwedenwill entertain residents and guests ofDaugavpilson June 8 and 9 at stages at the Unity square, Dubrovin park, courtyard of Daugavpils Regional and Art Museum, junction of Rigas and Viestura streets,DaugavpilsOlympic centre.

On Saturday at 9.00 at go-cart track ‘Blāzma’ Latvian Open Individual Club Teams Championship in scooter racing will take place. At 12.00 Latvian Weightlifting Championship in Classic Bench Press will begin in thesquareofDaugavpilstheatre. Street basketball and gymnasts championships will take place in front of the shopping centre ‘Solo’.

Festive procession will begin at 14.00 and it will move as usually from the Railway station along the Rigas street. Entrepreneurs and manufacturers have been invited to participate in the procession. The procession will finish at the Unity square, where the festive opening of the city festival will take place at 14.45. The evening will proceed with the concert of Olga Pīrāgs and orchestra ‘Daugava’ in the high-tempo Latin rhythms.

At 20.00 at Daugava banks Avio show will start, after an hour- at 21.00 the main participants of the city festival 2013 – pop/rock band ‘Brainstorm’ will perform at the central stage of the Unity Square. This year the ‘Brainstorm’ will participate in Glastonbury Festival (theUK), they will take the stage the same day as the legendary British rock band '’The Rolling Stones’. This festival is theGreat Britain’s biggest music event - all 140,000 tickets to the festival were sold-out in record time of just 1.5 hours.

Fireworks show will take place at Daugava banks at 23.00. Youth and those who like club music will continue celebrating of the festival at disco party “Daugavpils Takeover 2013” (23.30 – 5.00) atDaugavpilsOlympic centre.

On Sunday, June 9, at 12.00 brides parade of the club ‘Tamideja’ will begin. The procession will take place in Krāslavas and Rigas streets as well as a ride of retro cars and bikers. At 14.45 the concert of band ‘Dabasu Durovys’ will take place.

At 18.00., near the shopping centre ‘Solo’ master class of motorcycle club ‘Iron Hard Brothers’ will take place. At 18.30 at the central stage of the city festival at the Unity square Russian band ‘Diskomafija’ will play, at 8.30 one of the most stylish groups of Latvia ‘Triānas parks’ will proceed. The band is the only band from the Baltics that participated in the music conference ‘South by Southwest’ (Texas, theUSA) - the world’s grandest event of the kind. Invitation to participate in the conference receives only bands carefully selected by an international jury.

TheDaugavpilscity festival will be closed by concert of the band AC/DC Tribute.lt, presented by ‘Galapagai festival (Lithuania)’. Galapagai is the largest open-air music and entertainment festival ofLithuania, which this year will take place in Zarasai (Lithuania) on August 2 and 3, located approximately 20 km fromDaugavpils.
