AMBASSADOR OF THE PEOPLE`S REPUBLIC OF CHINA VISITS DAUGAVPILS City news
On October 5 and 6, H.E. Mr. Tang Songgen, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Latvia, paid an official visit to Daugavpils. During the two-day visit, the delegation met with the management of the Daugavpils City Government and visited several objects which are important in the context of international communication.
The visit began with a meeting with Mr. Andrejs Elksniņš, the Chairperson of the Council of Daugavpils City Government, during which the 20-year long cooperation between Daugavpils and its sister city Harbin (China), the impact of the war in Ukraine on transit and logistics, the ability of local business to adapt to changing economic conditions, education system, medicine and many other topics were discussed. “The potential of China's internal market and the potential investment volumes are huge. Relations built in a friendly tone helps to develop the economy as well. Nowadays, this is the most important thing", says the Chairperson of the Council, Andrejs Elksniņš.
After the meeting with the management of the Council, the delegation visited the Daugavpils Regional Hospital, where they were shown the newest equipment and issues related to the sphere of healthcare were discussed.
On October 6, the guests went to Daugavpils University, as well as got familiar with the cultural and historical heritage of Daugavpils in the Rothko Museum and Daugavpils Fortress.
Summarizing the results of the visit, Līvija Jankovska, the Chairperson of the Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs, states: "During all these 20 years, since the sister city relationship between the city of Harbin in China and Daugavpils in Latvia were established, we have had a very close cooperation, which is now fully restored after the restrictions during the pandemic. The visit of the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China and his team to Daugavpils is a proof that the cooperation continues. The program of the visit included meetings that helped to see new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of education, medicine, culture and art. The nearest goals and plans were set, as well as common points of interest were found, which could enrich the cultural and social life of both Daugavpils and the entire Latgale region. Reasons for productive and mutually beneficial cooperation can also be seen in the fields of sports, education, tourism and medicine".
