Citizens elaborate ideas for the development of Jaunās Forštates park City news

An urban development hackathon took place on March 19th and 26th at the Daugavpils Culture Palace, where local citizens had the opportunity to create and present ideas for the development of Jaunās Forštates Park.
Municipality invited to participate in a park development hackathon to create innovative proposals for its transformation. Participants focused on how to improve the environmental infrastructure and create diverse community activities that would encourage the involvement of local residents. The aim was to turn the area into a lively and active public space where people could both play sport and socialise outdoors.
The event was attended by high school students, university students and local residents representing different fields and professions. On the first day of the hackathon, participants got to know each other, learned more about the purpose of this hackathon, started prototyping their projects and then spent the whole week refining their work.
The event continued on March 26th with an opportunity for participants to finalise their ideas and prepare them for presentation. The hackathon brought together 7 teams who created 7 ideas for the development of the park into a vibrant neighbourhood hub for outdoor sports, culture and socialising activities, producing both digital visualisations and physical models of the park.
At the end of the event, ideas for the development of the park were presented and the participants received recognition and promotional awards, including from the municipality's tourism, culture and sports institutions.
The best idea for the development of the Jaunās Forštates park, according to the jury, was developed by the Daugavpils State City Secondary School student team "Čaklie skolēni", represented by Edvīns Lagers, Jelizaveta Petkeviča, Darja Zeiļa and Jekaterīna Latuga. The team proposed solutions that could revitalise the park area, making it a modern, inclusive and sustainable recreational space for all residents.
Meanwhile, the hackathon participants' choice award went to the Latgale Industrial Technical School student team "Arhitektūras tehniķi", who included in their vision landscaping elements that would make the park more modern, at the same time preserving the existing trees and adding new planting to make it greener and more harmonious.
Urban development hackathon in Daugavpils was organised within European territorial cooperation program "URBACT IV" project "Public space regeneration through integrated urban sports hubs for the participation of young citizens" (acronym: Re-Gen, No.20269), as one of the project's small-scale (testing) actions, which resulted in the elaboration of development solutions for the territory of Jaunās Forštates park through interdisciplinary cooperation and co-design methods.
The event was organised with the financial support of the European Union. Daugavpils Local Government of State City is fully responsible for its content, and it may not reflect the opinion of the European Union. More information about the project read HERE or https://urbact.eu/networks/re-gen.
